Bear Fruits in Keeping with Repentance!

What will John the Baptist say if he is doing ministry in Singapore?
Seriously, what will he say to us today, if he is transported to our time?

Bad news: He can't and he won't!
Good news: He had already spoken!

We all know the biblical account. John the Baptist was baptizing followers of God in Jerusalem, Judea & the region in the Jordan River (Luke 3; Matt 3). In came 3 separate groups, & John the Baptist delivered 3 short but thought-provoking admonitions. These words should search our hearts & pierce our souls as much as they did to his audiences in the 1st century.

His message was clear & concise: Bear fruits that’s worthy of repentance. (Matt 3:8; Luke 3:8).

John the Baptist was tired, even sick, of the pious & pretentious hypocrites of his days: people who wanted him to baptize them only because they desired to join the popular religious movement of that day. To them, John’s baptism is but a fashionable statement, a ceremonial transaction that will legitimize their vain religious grand-standing.

But John publicly exposed their fraudulent attitudes & dangerous beliefs. He demanded that they “bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Luke 3:8). To John, repentance is the prerequisite for sinners before a holy God. It’s the only response & posture before the Throne of Grace. And he further outlined the heart of repentance: Change, or more aptly, transformation. Like all transformation, the end product is drastically different from the raw materials. In other words, genuine repentance makes an observable difference in a person’s life.

John understood the people of his days. He knew that if a man repents before God, he will be different in at least 3 observable ways. He will be first generous, giving of his surplus to others in need (Luke 3:11); then honest, taking no more than one is authorized to have (Luke 3:13); & finally contented with such as one has or allocated (Luke 3:14).

Generosity, honesty & contentment are rare character qualities in these avaricious days. More often than not, we find instead meanness, dishonesty & discontentment, which give rise to pain & sorrow, with distress, distrust, disillusionment & disappointment. However, where these former virtues are truly present & practiced, they would bring not only stability to our community, but peace to the individual soul & restoration to his relationships with others.

How does it apply to us today?

To begin, we can easily identify ourselves in the groups John confronted.

The first group he addressed was the multitude. In a sea of unknown faces & strangers, it’s each for his own. Acts of giving & sharing your staffs freely is in short supply in this beastly octagon. It is natural to be selfish in the faceless & heartless multitude. The multitude prefers the effect of by-standers rather than the actions of first responders. There is no class differences in multitude. It covers anybody & everybody, male or female, straight or straight-up messy, young & old, educated or less educated, rich or filthy rich, wise or otherwise. Regardless of zip codes, gene codes or bank codes, you are in this group. In today’s count, they are the Average Joe & Jane. In the absence of godly generosity, this group usually exhibits meanness to everyone in preference of self-preservation.

The second group was the tax collectors. They were the power brokers of their days, the “go-betweeners”, the outsource specialists, the elites, the private & privileged club members. They were also a much hated cohort. In today’s terms, these middlemen represent anyone who have influences or ascribed authority over others, usually getting people to do what they don’t like (like tax) & with delegated power to enforce compliance. Tax collectors are usually rich people; rich people are usually powerful people; & powerful people are usually corrupted, due to abuse. In today’s term, they are the for-profits businessmen, the for-commissions salesman of Wall Street, & those with no conscience and no products of and on their own. Their product is YOU! Yes, you – the consumer. They will juice and milk you dry, by hook or by crook; usually by crook. To get you to use, try and buy their products and services, some non-disclosures and fact omission are necessary. In business dealings everyday and everywhere, dishonesty is par for the course. Truth is non-kosher & taboo; half-truths & whole lies are the most trade-able commodities. The tax collectors’ sins are working for the wrong cause (their Roman handlers) and over-charging. Our culture placed an obscene premium on over-rated people offering over-priced products to an over-dosed population. Hence John warned them squarely against dishonesty!

The final group was the soldiers. Quite sure he referred to Roman soldiers & not local conscripted soldiers of Jewish descent, because the Roman overlords would not condone such military arrangement. In those days, solders were also policemen. They were the on-site dispute-settling agents when no clear legal paths were presented. A little extortion will cover a multitude of wrongdoings. Either way, they represented for us today those in civil & government offices, with or without the military outfitting. Their known characteristics are tendencies to intimidate (threatening subordinates and contractors), proclivities to bear false witnesses (falsified document, fake reports, kissing superiors’ asses for career advancement prospect). Worst still, this group always grumble & grip about being overworked & underpaid, even though to the average reasonable bystanders, they are drawing astronomic income. To this group, enough is never enough. Such discontentment is fertile soil for an oasis of sinful endeavors.

Okay, I may have exaggerated a little. However, human’s nature have not changed much over 2 millennium. If anything, it has actually gotten worst. There is much meanness, dishonesty & discontentment despite repackaging them via 21st century lies & lingo. Not been generous is relabeled as being careful with our resources. Dishonesty is re-branded as being shrewd, or just a lack of candor. Discontentment is lauded as upward-seeking & self-motivated. Same soup, different labels on the menu. Bottom-line: The goal is not which group you may pigeon-holed into. Fact is, I saw myself in ALL 3 groups! The whole purpose is to repent, & through the process grow in generosity, honesty & contentment, & by extension, be like our Lord Jesus Christ.

As the Scripture exhorts, repentance is a gift from God (2 Tim 2:25). As with all gifts, there is a Giver. The precious Son of God suffered & died on the Cross so that we all can have reconciliation with the Father through His perfect sacrificial atonement. Like every divine gifts, repentance will bring much blessing to the soul of man if received in humility & with gratitude. It may at first evoke some resistance of mind & heaviness of heart, but it has a unique & divine therapy all of its own. The end result: Helping us draw closer to God, & find rest.

So, I will end the way I started: What will John the Baptist say to us today after 2000 years?
Well, I guess he will utter the same admonitions: Bear fruits in keeping with repentance!
Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else.

Those who repent (μετάνοια)* and believe in Jesus Christ will find rest for their souls. (Matt 11:28)

*μετάνοια (metanoia) - Strong NT 3341 – a change of mind

The Free & the Persecuted

The free and the persecuted are twins in the faith. Yet they differ quite starkly in practice.

We talk about Jesus Christ,
They talk like Jesus Christ.
We are believers,
They are worshipers.
We are confessing Christians,
They are committed Christians.
We declare, "In God we trust!"
They declare, "For God we thirst!"
We know the Word of God,
They know the God of the Word.
We preach the individual's potential,
They preach the Spirit's potency.
Our hearts are willing, but our flesh weak,
Their flesh is ever willing, and their hearts meek.
We desire eternity in Heaven,
They desire eternity with Christ.
We are place-centred,
They are Person-centred.
We deny Christ sometimes,
They deny self everytime.
We have the will to live,
They have the willingness to die.

But the most lamentable distinction must be this:

WE HAVE THE BIBLE BUT IT IS THEY WHO HAVE THE FAITH!

The Last Epistle of John Randon

The Last Epistle of John Randon

Dear brethren, you are about to read a true account of the experience of a British soldier who was critically wounded in the War of Independence at the Battle of Bunker’s Hill. Taken from “The Journal of the American War”, it was sent by Major Aberfeld, an orthopedic surgeon from the 130th General Hospital. In his last and final letter to his beloved wife, John describes the magnitude of the grace, peace and joy that he found in the presence of God as he was about to enter into glory of the Lord. Brethren, let too draw nearer to our wonderful Savior regardless of our physical degradation and truly enjoy the inner joy, grace and peace that is found only in Christ Jesus!
- Vincent Silvarajoo
______________________________________________________________
Yesterday we had a bloody and obstinate fight, in which many were killed, and numbers wounded. I have received two balls, one in my groin, and another near the breast. I am now so weak with the loss of blood, that I can hardly dictate these few lines, as the last tribute of my unchangeable love to you. The surgeons inform me that three hours will be the utmost I can survive. Atlas, too true was the dire presage that brooded my mind, that we should never meet again on this side of awful eternity.

During our passage from England to America, I gave myself up to read the Bible, as it was the only book I was possessed of. The Almighty Parent of mankind was pleased to draw my heart to Him, by the sweet attraction of His grace and at the same time to enlighten my mind. There was in our regiment a corporal, whose name was Pierce, a pious man; I inquire after him, and we soon contracted a strong friendship. He was pleased to explain to me the amazing love of God, in giving His Son Jesus Christ to bleed & die for mankind. He condescended to unfold to me the mystery of salvation by faith, the nature of the new birth, and the great necessity of holiness of heart and life. In short, he became my spiritual father; and under God, to him I owe all the good I am acquainted with.

Soon after we landed, God was pleased to speak peace to my soul. Oh the bliss, the unutterable joy that I then felt through the blood of the Lamb! How did I long to tell all the world what Jesus had done for me! But how did I long, yes, burn to have you to taste and know the love of God in Christ Jesus! I would have given all the world to have been with you, to have informed you of the pearl of great price. As we shall never meet more in this vale of tears, let me impose this last, this dying obligation upon you; and if I was dear to you, let me beg of you not to neglect the last advice of your departing husband. It is, that you give yourself up to God, read the Bible, the good books, and be often found among them who inquire after salvation. And the Lord shall guide you in His ways. O endeavor to bring up the dear little ones in the fear of God. Never fix your heart upon the vain and unsubstantial things of the world. Heaven and the love of God are the only things that demand our hearts, or at least are worthy of engrossing them.

And you, my dear infants, though you have not the perfect knowledge of your worthless father, I beg of you to meet me in the realms of bliss. The God that blessed Jacob and Joseph shall bless you. Seek Him and He will be found of you; call upon Him, and He will hear and bless you. What was the world but sin and sorrow? The rich are oppressed with wealth; and the poor are groaning for the want of that which the others are burdened with. The men in power are affected with holding the reins, and guiding the helm; and the governed are oppressed with imaginary evils. The life of a soldier is filled with dangers and deaths. A city life is full of confusion and strife; and that of the country is loaded with toil and labor. But the evil of all evils, flows from our own sinful nature. Whatever we are, we may be happy; we have the key to bliss on our own breasts. The world itself never made any one happy. God is the bliss and solace of a reasonable soul; and God is everywhere, and we have everywhere access to Him. Learn then, my dear children, when you grow up, to seek your permanent happiness in God, through a crucified Redeemer.

My dear wife, I shall smile to see you combat sin, conquer the world, & subdue the flesh. How I shall smile to meet you in the bright frontiers of heaven. These hands shall weave for you – the wreath triumphant! I first shall hail you welcome to your native mansions! I first shall guide you to the celestial city, and introduce you to the sacred throne of our God, where we will together bow, transported at the feet of the ever adorable Jesus. Then, then, will we strike our melodious harps of gold, in the most exalted strain of harmony and love. The shall our love be consummated, refined & eternalized!

          The world recedes, it disappears
Heaven opens my eyes, my ears
          With sounds seraphic ring:
Lend, lend your wings, I mount, I fly!
Oh! Grave where is thy victory?
Oh Death! Where is thy sting?

More would I say, but life ebbs out apace; my tongue ceases to perform its office; bright angels stand round the gory turn on which I be, ready to escort me to the arms of my Jesus; bending saints reveal my shining crown, and beckon me away; yea, methinks, my Jesus bids me come. Adieu! Adieu! Dear Love.

I am Back!

I AM BACK!
After a 13-year unannounced hiatus, I finally got the chance to spill these 3 dreadful and dangerous words on my own terms! To me, Arnie had come back enough times already! With the COVID-19 lock-down and most cinemas closed, he really don't need to be back any sooner. This round, I hope (but can't promise) I am here to stay, at least for a while.

Before you wonder where the buttons have I been all those years, I honestly ask you in return: Does it matter? I am back! Move forward :)

Okay, for the really curious cats, I will simply say that I have traveled much, ate much, read much, and grow a little. I believe I am still the same, but not quite the same. More importantly, I have made new friends, but lost some too (to death and sudden disappearances).

Back to why I am back.

The reason I dusted this blog is to rebuild a digital record for my teenage son, who coincidentally look like me. I intend to journal my spiritual experiences, thoughts and lessons so that he can access via his mobile device going forward. Boh pian...gotta gear to the times, yet anchor to the ROCK!

Stay tune!

Board Games are Fun; so is Losing!

I had 2 rounds of board games last night with 3 of my buddies. We had 'Around Africa in 10 Days' for round 1 and a very challenging game called 'Citadel' in round 2. It was hilarious; it was funny; it was confusing (it's always confusing in the first 20 mins or so trying to figure out the rules). Okay, I didn't win in any of those 2 rounds. But heck, who really cares? Afterall, when you are my age, winning really isn't everything. Strangely, I used to think the opposite when I was much younger. Winning really is...EVERYTHING.

As a young boy, I used to think and act competitively. I play and sing competitively. As a young adult, I sell and market competitively. Everything use to be a competition, and in this competition, there can only be one winner, and that winner must be ME. How miserable...expecially when I can't win all the time.

I have since repented years ago. And I was glad I did, because I finally realized that it's not about the winning (or losing). It's not about the destination, but the journey; not the product, but the process. When I focus on the journey instead of the destination, I start to enjoy the friendship and the company I am in. And guess what, when I arrive at the end, we all win!

I used to resent people who try to comfort me by saying, "Oh come on, it's only a game". Yeah right, try it on yourself when you are on the losing team. That was my attitude years ago. But now, the phrase "It's only a game" has more significant meaning to me. It's NOT JUST A GAME; it's a connection. I have a meaningful connection with another being who has chosen to spend time interacting with me apparently via an inconsequencial event: a board game. It's not a game anymore. It's relationship, and in relationship, everybody wins.

I regretted those years when I shunned away one too often from playing games with others because I know I cannot afford to lose. Now I feel that I cannot afford NOT to lose. Less is more. To win, we sometimes have to lose. Someone once quoted: You win the battle, but lose the war. You win an arguement, but lose a friend. You win the match, but lose the respect. How sad. Yes, I can afford to lose now. It's not a big deal anymore.

Nowadays, I have a wonderful feeling when I lost a game, because I know I have won something else: I have won my inner battle, the tension within, the struggle to base my self-worth on something so temporal as the status of a winner. Deep inside, it's okay now. Relationships take priority over personal immaturity.

It was a journey that had taken a great toll on my circles of friends and loved ones. It was a journey of self-discovery and self-awareness that had left a trail of dead bodies and dead-ends along the way. I felt guilty and ugly. What kind of outlook and motto is this anyway: In winning, I lose. I would rather now champion "In losing, I win".

Tonight, I have forgotten how bad it feels to be losing;
Tonight, I don't remember the pressure of not winning;
Tonight, I don't request for a draw or a tie;
Tonight, I finally enjoy losing.
And it is in such a wonderful night like this one that I once again enjoy the marvelous fellowship and companionship of ...my friends!

Love Letter to Ing

My Dear Wife,

You are so easy to forgive. I realised that little irritations, small offenses, emotional wounds and hurt feelings build up over time. Sometime they are temporarily overlooked, buried, or nearly forgotten, but not quite other times. I've been responsible for my share of hurts and pains, and for that I'm truely sorry. Please forgive me. I also want to make sure that I've forgiven you. I don't want to carry around an old offense that breeds bitterness and eventually pushes us apart.

I understand now that a vital part of any loving and lasting relationship must be forgiveness. We cannot survive without it. It's impossible to love someone without inflicting hurt from time to time. We're human, and we're imperfect at this thing called love. So let's choose to forgive.

Because I Love You,
Your Husband.

The 2 Most Important & Beautiful Person in my Life

My Life will be so empty without both of you...

Joash Boy-Boy:
I noticed the red car in your hand is getting smaller, huh.
You used to hold it with 2 hands.
Hey, you have grown a little bigger again :)
